Hosting
The web-server is a specially configured computer whose job it is to send web-pages and images anywhere in the world to those computers that ask for them. This is the machine on which your website is hosted. It is therefore connected directly to the internet on a fast and reliable link. Because of this, it is also open to attack. As many recent news stories have made clear, a high level of security is required to keep the server safe from hackers and worms.
Because we only host our own websites, there is no need for us to give direct write access to the web-server to anyone. Most other web-hosting companies must supply FTP accounts to their users so they can upload changes to their websites. An important maxim in Internet Security is to expose a bare minimum of services to the internet - the less services you present, the less potential security holes you have for hackers to exploit.
